After being briefly knocked off the top of the charts in September by the Fiesta, the Ford Focus was once again the most popular car in the UK last month. Registrations for the Focus reached 9665, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, comfortably ahead of the 7263 achieved by the Vauxhall Astra, which knocked the Fiesta back down to third.

These positions reflect the market for the whole of 2006 so far, and in fact October was a very representative month in that respect. The Vauxhall Corsa, Renault Megane, Volkswagen Golf, Renault Clio and Ford Mondeo were fourth to eighth both for the month and for the year to date.

The exceptions come at the bottom of the tables. Ninth and tenth for October were the Vauxhall Zafira (still the best-selling MPV in the country) and the Peugeot 207, but through 2006 as a whole the BMW 3-Series is ninth, ahead of the Zafira.
